Five arrested on suspicion of fraud offences following local elections

Five people have been arrested on suspicion of fraud offences following the local elections.

Greater Manchester Police launched an investigation in the days leading up to and after the 7 May election in the St Peter’s ward in Tameside.

Officers said they are specifically investigating the process of how candidates were put forward and represented in the ward, and if this adhered to the relevant legislation and electoral procedures.

They made initial enquiries last week and have since launched a full investigation into the allegations.

The five people – four men and a woman aged between 23 and 47 – were arrested at addresses in Tameside on Thursday morning. They remain in custody for questioning.

Police said they are working closely with the Electoral Commission and local partners as part of the enquiries, and will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
